If I had to sum up everything I've learned in the last six years in one sentence, this would be it:
Every change in life is for the worse.
Every decision I've ever taken has been wrong and every attempt to better my life has brought disappointment. I give up. From now on, I'm just gonna wait in apathy for life to run its course.

him: "You're your brother's brother, aren't you?" me: (carefully) "Uhm... Yes." him: "Don't you have a brother who looks like you and lives near here?" me: "No." him: "Ah. Pardon me, then." me: "...No problem."
And the weekend is only beginning~

05:47 pm - Militance and belligerence
When I was a kid I was mostly indifferent to religion. My paternal grandmother was very catholic, and on the other side my mother made sure I didn't take any religion classes in elementary school, but other than that my family simply didn't talk about it. I flirted with agnosticism during my teens, and nowadays you could say I'm an "atheist through and through," although I'm nowhere near as militant about it as some of the more hardcore members of this group.
I generally support these movements. Being rather unskilled in politics or diplomacy, I prefer not to get into debates, but I like seeing other people taking up the fight. What does bother me is seeing that sometimes atheists get so caught up in their anti-religious fervor that they become just as "fundamentalist" as their adversaries.
That brings me to the central theme of this post. There's an uproar in the U.S. about Jessica Ahlquist, a girl who's suing her school because of a message engraved on the auditorium walls. (More info here and here.)

| The crux of the matter. |
I find her attitude questionable. The prayer seems harmless and there was no reason to go prodding the Christians because of it. I understand that the constitution enforces separation of church and state, public schools must defend freedom of religion, etc., but when you get right down to it the message is pretty nice. It's about friendship, teamwork, respect, honesty, etc. There's a reference to The Man Upstairs, true, but even being an atheist I can appreciate its positive meaning. If we removed the first and last lines, the prayer could pass for a 100% secular message.
I had a brief chat about this with a friend (who is much more militant in his atheism, and was the one who showed me that article in the first place), and we concluded that this kind of attitude is counterproductive. The public is already convinced that every atheist is an arrogant and immoral jerk; propagating this image will only generate bad publicity for our cause. Faith is a delicate topic, and there's no point in poking at wasps' nests without a good reason.
The Cranston High School West prayer doesn't strike me as a good reason. It strikes me as a publicity stunt from a teenager who wants to show off and doesn't fully understand the consequences of her theatrics. Current Mood: uncomfortable Current Music: Castlevania SotN - Prayer

GOD.
How did the concept of a "Let's Play" evolve from "recording of a game" to "recording of a game's video while the audio is replaced with pointless babbling"?
I just want some Goddamn gameplay videos. Can I get that, YouTube? Please?

I'd heard that the trailers for Disney's Tangled were lying, and that they completely misrepresented the actual tone of the movie. I was glad to find out that the rumors were correct!
You have no idea how sick I am of the post-Shrek tween-baiting slang-laced pop-culture anachronistic mess that passes for CGI animation nowadays. Tangled manages to bait those tweens with a bit of misleading marketing and a few (mildly painful) lines of snarky dialogue in its script, but still feels like a classic and charming Disney fairy-tale. In that regard, I liked it even more than The Princess and the Frog, which sadly reminded me of Don Bluth's efforts in the late 90s (fantastic animation, but gratuitous musical numbers and a nonsensical plotline).
Tangled doesn't overdo the Disney formula, keeping its musical numbers sparse and relevant so that the story can shine on its own merits. I was very impressed with the characterization on display -- Mother Gothel is genuinely intriguing as a villain and Flynn undergoes some heavy character development, but most of all this is Rapunzel's coming-of-age story and deals with some very serious and mature elements without hitting us over the head with its morals. In that regard, it's a great step towards quality storytelling the likes of which I'm used to seeing in Pixar's movies and I imagine that John Lasseter's influence is to thank here.
Of course, this being Disney, it's all about the eye candy. The visuals in this movie are stunning. The colors! The subtle movements in the foliage! The flowing hair, glinting in the sunlight! I just can't praise it enough. I'll probably watch it again a few times just so I can appreciate the gorgeous artwork on display. The character's animations aren't quite up to par, with some of that dreaded Shrek/Madagascar influence that makes everyone jump around like caffeinated squirrels... but now I'm just nitpicking.
I regret not having watched this sooner. It's what I've been craving for over a decade. That said, there will always be a special place in my heart for traditional hand-drawn animation. If Disney could marry The Princess and the Frog's animation with Tangled's storytelling I'd be ecstatic. They can even repeat the faux-tween marketing gambit to ensure the movie gets the success it deserves. After all, true art is worth a few white lies.

I tried out Skyward Sword today, and I think it might be the worst game that's ever been shat out of Nintendo's ass. I want my afternoon back.
What little story I've seen so far has been the usual JRPG crud with the prophecies and the destinies and the hero who begins the game being woken up by an angry girlfriend. It's all pretty textbook, but it might have been bearable if it at least sported a sensible control scheme. As it stands, though, I'm forced to wrestle with the Wii Remote every five seconds and the whole thing is just not worth the trouble.
Fuck Zelda. I am officially done with the series.
